It’s just a square

I’m frantically working on gifts…

Notes from Emily 12/21/2021

I always have great intentions of making dishcloths to stuff stockings and add to simple gifts to my loved ones who don’t need anything but I always want to give them a little something that is useful and thoughtful.

I always fail. I think I finally realized why this year though. I keep trying to follow a pattern for whatever reason, rather than just using my brain. Ultimately, doing a little math on something as simple as a square is actually LESS brain power for me than following some over complicated pattern for something so simple.

This afternoon I frogged the dishrag I was working on and started fresh on a waffle-y type pattern using multiples of 4. If you are looking for a quick and simple gift, I hope this helps you!

CO 40 st (I used long tail CO cause it’s my fave)
Knit 4 -6 rows of garter stitch
K4,*P4, K4* rpt *-* until last 4 stitches, K4
K4, *P4, K4 * repeat *-* until last 4 stitches, K4
Repeat these two rows 2 more times and then reverse them:
K4, * K4, P4* repeat *-* until last 4 stitches, K4
K4, * K4, P4* repeat * - * until last 4 stitches, K4

With my loose gauge using size 6 needles and some good ol’ Peaches & Cream cotton yarn, this washcloth is 8” across so I plan to repeat my 6 row waffle pattern until it is about 7” and complete it with 4-6 rows of garter stitch till it is an 8” square.

If you need me, sparks will be flying off my needles till I get at least 3 hats and a whole slew of washcloths finished up!

*Coffee mug is by Chandra Debuse and I’m drinking some local brew from Kalamazoo Coffee Company that is a delightful Creme Brulee.
